I'm a lifelong fantasy fan and video game nerd. I've always been what they call a voracious reader, though since the pandemic began I've mostly only been able to read fanfic; the prospect of a long novel with a new world and characters I have to figure out is quite tiring. Then again, I've read several extremely long danmei novels over the past few years.
What's drawn me to danmei is that it does not generally fall into the same tired structure and tropes that too many Western fantasy/romance/sff novels do. I don't know what's going to happen in the plot. Characters are richly defined and morally complex. Actions have consequences. It's not always easy to separate the characters into good and evil buckets. I don't smell the ghost of Movie Rights standing behind the author telling them that they should cut this or that or add X or Y or to make sure that all the characters are Hot Young Hollywood Types. Plus, truly deep romance. Couples don't just fall in love because one's the Lead Male and the other is The Female.
I hope and try to be respectful of national and cultural backgrounds and perspectives that differ from my own. I am sure I make mistakes; please point these out to me! Be kind, if you can. I've got a touch of the ol' rejection-sensitive dysphoria.
Likely topics of discussion:
I'm not sure yet. This has a very livejournal vibe, so maybe I'll talk about... myself? Perhaps fic that I have read lately, things my cats or dog are doing, how messy my house is.
Current media of interest:
MDZS and the other MXTX books. To a lesser or more sporadic degree: Nirvana in Fire, 2ha, BNHA, Yuri on Ice!!, various other anime (FMA, Erased, Jojo's Bizarre Adventure(s)). TV: What We Do In The Shadows, Our Flag Means Death, some reality shows where people do art and are nice to each other. Many Video Games including Persona 5, Fire Emblem: Three Houses, Dragon Age, Mass Effect and a slew of RPGs and building/cozy games. Oh, and Tetris Effect, which I swear is brain medicine.
