Hello! Like many others, I'm intending to flee Twitter but still crave community, so I'm trying things out here!

About me:
White Canadian cis woman, she/her, age 40+ (certified fandom old(tm)). Some shade of grey asexual. Employed in media. Eternal cat lady, though I also have a dog who is somehow over 10 years old now (how'd that happen? she is baby!)

I'm a lifelong fantasy fan and video game nerd. I've always been what they call a voracious reader, though since the pandemic began I've mostly only been able to read fanfic; the prospect of a long novel with a new world and characters I have to figure out is quite tiring. Then again, I've read several extremely long danmei novels over the past few years.
What's drawn me to danmei is that it does not generally fall into the same tired structure and tropes that too many Western fantasy/romance/sff novels do. I don't know what's going to happen in the plot. Characters are richly defined and morally complex. Actions have consequences. It's not always easy to separate the characters into good and evil buckets. I don't smell the ghost of Movie Rights standing behind the author telling them that they should cut this or that or add X or Y or to make sure that all the characters are Hot Young Hollywood Types. Plus, truly deep romance. Couples don't just fall in love because one's the Lead Male and the other is The Female.

I hope and try to be respectful of national and cultural backgrounds and perspectives that differ from my own. I am sure I make mistakes; please point these out to me! Be kind, if you can. I've got a touch of the ol' rejection-sensitive dysphoria.

Likely topics of discussion:
I'm not sure yet. This has a very livejournal vibe, so maybe I'll talk about... myself? Perhaps fic that I have read lately, things my cats or dog are doing, how messy my house is.

Current media of interest:
MDZS and the other MXTX books. To a lesser or more sporadic degree: Nirvana in Fire, 2ha, BNHA, Yuri on Ice!!, various other anime (FMA, Erased, Jojo's Bizarre Adventure(s)). TV: What We Do In The Shadows, Our Flag Means Death, some reality shows where people do art and are nice to each other. Many Video Games including Persona 5, Fire Emblem: Three Houses, Dragon Age, Mass Effect and a slew of RPGs and building/cozy games. Oh, and Tetris Effect, which I swear is brain medicine.

By the way, I ramble on a lot.

I have a goal to someday return some of the joy that fic writers have generously given me for decades by being able to send them fanart (if they want). I struggle with developing my skills, mainly due to perfectionism (and I had repetitive stress injuries in both my arms for half the year, oops)

fic reread

I reread "I Wish You Would" by brooklinegirl (https://archiveofourown.org/works/31172963/chapters/77038886) this week; I'm not sure if it's one of the established MDZS Wangxian "classics" but it probably should be. (It's definitely not unknown; lots of comments and deserved adulation!)

It's in the modern AU "lan zhan FUCKS" (and WWX finds out about it and has a crisis) subgenre. There are several great fics like this but, you know, the more cakes, the merrier! As a side note, I love that AO3 tag. I was told that the reason it's Like That is because that's how the first person to use the tag wrote it. A tag's creator determines how it looks, so to speak :) and that's why FUCKS has to be in uppercase.

Aaanyway, it has comphet Wei Ying having a sexuality meltdown and Lan Zhan suffering(tm). Alternating POV, great characterization, hotness, one of brooklinegirl's best! (But has she written anything that isn't excellent?)

In the RL area, I've finished painting three out of my four office walls complete with baseboards so I can finally move most of the furniture and books back into place and start enjoying the improved ambience. I need a prettier ceiling lamp in there now.

I'd love to post little blurbs about the fic I'm reading or have recently finished, but... that would require me to go through my ereader and find those fics on AO3 then actually mark them as read, leave comments and kudos, etc., and I have SUCH a HUGE backlog (literally hundreds) that the ol' neurospicy all-or-nothing kicks in and I get immediately overwhelmed.

I WILL just say that I reread "The simplest way forward" by harriet_vane and it's still absolutely justified in being one of the classics. The characters just jump off the page. A perfect LWJ, who *we* know has absolute love and care for WWX because of the casual references here and there to how he looks at WWX just a little too long, or purses his lips just a little when WWX talks about the Jiangs, or how he's just a bit too slow or fast to respond here and there... and a perfect WWX who cares so, so much. This was probably the first kidfic I read in which I actually liked the kid. (this was in 2020, I've read many more since! MDZS writers are amazing!) A-Yuan is a full character, realistically childlike and not some precocious miniature adult. He isn't perfect and he isn't just a prop. He invents weird little stories that only kids would understand and his dads love him. Holy shit!

anyway, I am also painting my office room to try to alleviate some of that slightly panicky feeling I currently get every time I enter the room. No more beige/tan: instead, a peaceful teal-green-grey-apparently-perfect colour for calm and some off-white for brightness.

Welp, time to try a first New Art post here?
This is a sketch of Grand Princess Liyang from Nirvana in Fire. It was meant to be a very quick exercise in painting skin tones but I got a bit carried away, so now it’s halfway between sketch and finished thingy. Ah well. Anyway, her skin in the source image was basically grey-blue…
